Chris Moyles leaves Radio 1’s Breakfast Show (now with audio)

11 Jul

Hello BBC Radio 1 addicts! Here’s some BREAKING NEWS.

The team 1

After joining BBC Radio 1 in 2004 and being the longest-ever breakfast host for the station the saviour is stepping down from the biggest show of them all, breakfast. There has been years of speculation and now on Wednesday 11th June 2012 Chris Moyles is actually leaving the breakfast slot. Read on for more!

The upsetting news was announced on this morning’s show, listen to the clip below to hear the man himself reveal the news of his departure:

Also, here’s what BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra’s controller – Ben Cooper had to say about the shock:

“I’d like to thank Chris. Quite simply, he has been the most successful breakfast show host in Radio 1’s history. For the past eight and a half years he has been entertaining millions of listeners every morning, which is testament to his incredible talent as a broadcaster.”

He is a man that is certainly not afraid to speak his mind, in 2010 he had an on-air rant about wages claiming that he had not been paid for two whole months. This was all between the time of 06:30 to 07:00. He’s also not shy to state the truth when he revealed on air in 2009 that he had suffered a 20% pay cut.

He joined the station in 1997 to takeover from Sara Cox and bring the listening figures up for breakfast. He then became the savour of Radio 1 and stepped into the hot-seat in 2004 and has been there ever since.

The most talked about Radio 1 DJ will stay with the show until September of this year. The same goes for his wonderful team: Comedy Dave Vitty, Dominic Byrne, Tina Daheley, Aled Haydn Jones, Freya and newly recruited Pippa.  One also has to think where this huge bombshell leaves them?! Aled on the air this morning mentioned something about a new deal but that is all I know. Here are my predictions though:

  • Comedy Dave Vitty – transition to BBC Radio 5Live.
  • Dominic Byrne – continue to present Radio 1 Newsbeat.
  • Tina Daheley – possibly continue to present the Sport on Radio 1’s new Breakfast Show.
  • Aled Haydn Jones – leave The Surgery and crossover to another popular radio station.
  • Freya – move to another producing job in Radio 1.
  • Pippa – also move to another producing job in Radio 1.

The news comes after the BBC’s governing body, the BBC Trust has said that Radio 1’s target audience is getting too old. A 2009 review also said that the station should concentrate on targeting their actual target bracket of 15-29 year olds listeners.  With this there has therefore been lost of pressure on new controller, Ben Cooper to take down the average listener of Radio 1 from 30 to 15-29. This he said today in Newsbeat is one of the many changes in a strategy we can expect to see over the forthcoming months in returning the station’s target audience to 15-29 year olds.

The Chris Moyles Show in 2010 at its highest peak had 12million listeners now reaching a total of 7.10 million in the latest RAJAR figures. In that time he also broke a World Record for the longest-ever Radio 1 show where he and sidekick, Comedy Dave conquered a 52-hour radio show for Comic Relief.

Award Winning Chris Moyles will continue to stay at the station until his contract ends in 2014 though. Plus, news is that him and Ben Cooper are in discussions for a brand new  show. He will also play King Herod in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Jesus Christ Superstar which goes on tour in September.
